Telem Holiday Party!

After a successful second year in operation, the Telem family came together for some Holiday cheer! We ate delicious home made food & drinks, played board games, the kids loved making their our own gift boxes and of course there was dancing. See what happened!

 

Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals information session

On Saturday, October 13th, 2012, the Village Collaborative (composed of Telem Center for the African Child, Association of African Journalists and Writers and The African Leadership Project) hosted a free information session for the public about the new immigration policy of Deferred Action.  Immigration attorney, Loide Rosa Jorge, explained what the policy was, who qualified, the application process and shared local resources on where to get help. See our participance!

3rd Annual Community Enrichment Day

On Thursday October 11th, 2012, Telem youth participated in New York City Councilmember Helen Diane Foster and the 16th District African and Muslim Council’s annual, Community Enrichment Day, a youth leadership event with the theme of “Intergenerational Dialogue.”  Our very own Diana Musa received a Rising Star award for her work in the community. See what happened!

 

African Day Parade in Harlem

On Sunday September 23rd, 2012 forty Telem supporters participated in the African Day Parade in Harlem. Telem’s Radio workshop participants also distributed copies of their audio stories which includes a “How-To create an Audio Podcast” video for other youth groups to create their own stories. See what happened!

 

Volunteer Thank You Picnic at Central Park

On Sunday September 2nd, 2012, Telem hosted a picnic in Central Park to thank our volunteers and supporters for making camp such a huge success! See what happened!

Cupcakes and Charity Fundraiser

On July 19th 2012, the Telem hosted “Cupcakes & Charity” – a fundraiser to raise awareness and funds for our cultural and educational programs. See what happened!

Union of Sierra Leone Organization Randall’s Island Picnic and Soccer Tournament

On Saturday July 7th 2012, Telem members participated in a USLO Picnic and Soccer Tournament.  We shared a variety of African food and drinks (homemade ginger beer) while Telem Radio workshop participants were busy interviewing community members for their audio stories. See what happened!

African Dance Party!

On Saturday May 19th, Telem danced the night away African style!! Special thanks to Azania, Sierra Leone’s Whitney Houston for an AMAZING performance! And to DJ VPNW for providing the African beats we partied to and enjoyed! Proceeds from the night benefit Telem Camp, a three day cultural camp for children of African descent, taking place Friday July 13th to Sunday July 15th. See what happened!

Telem Learns How To Dance Azonto!

On Saturday March 17th, as part of Telem’s cultural events programming, Telem youth, board members, supporters and new friends met up in Harlem to learn how to Azonto, a dance style originating in Ghana. We want to extend special thanks to Isata Sheriff, Mbalu Fofana and our new youth representatives Atinisia Sheriff and Fatumata Fofana for helping to coordinate the event.  See what happened!
