Telem Volunteers At 92nd St Y Teensgiving
On Sunday November 13th, fifteen Telem tweens and teens along with four chaperones volunteered at a long term care nursing home and rehabilitation center in Manhattan. They assisted during an adaptive movement class, participated in a sing along to cheer the elderly residents and created thanksgiving greeting cards. It was a mutual exchange of cultural traditions. The children learned the words to some old time favorites such as “Over There” and they performed “Ambo Sheku Sheh”, a Sierra Leonean childhood game and dance for the residents. They ended the day by transporting residents to a central space for a concert they were to enjoy later. Fun was had by all. See what happened!

We visited the Brain exhibit, Hall of African Peoples and Hall of African Mammals, watched the Imax movie: Tornado Alley, took a journey to the stars at the Hayden Planetarium and interacted with some hands on exhibits in the Discovery Room. It was the first visit to a museum for some of our participants. What a fabulous introduction! See what happened!
Telem’s Family Day
Family Day was an opportunity for campers, counselors, parents, members and guests to meet Telem’s board and advisory board to discuss our shared vision for the organization. Guests screened a slide show of our first Telem camp highlighting the various workshops the campers participated in, while enjoying some delicious African food. Thank you to Cynthia Richardson and the rest of the Surrey Co-op Board for offering their lovely courtyard space for our event. Thanks also to Andy King of the Bronx Youth Empowerment Program and Veronica Buapim for making it happen. See what happened!
